Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially theInsecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. The Question of the month (optional) is:
What’s harder for you to come up with, book titles or character names?
I have no trouble coming up with names for my characters. It’s so much fun matching my people with just the right name. Coming up with the perfect title is tough for me, really tough. For my first book, which is the true story of the random road rage murder of my younger brother I struggled for months to come up with the right title. My editor kept giving me suggestions and I hated them all. Time was running out. With only three-days to come up with something, I was so stressed out I had trouble sleeping. I finally passed out into a deep sleep and I had a dream where my brother told me the title was obvious. He said “I was stomped to death in Bristol by a bunch of people who called themselves, boyz.
The title should be Bristol boyz Stomp.”
So it was. A year later I visited with a spiritual advisor and she told me a young man who passed wanted me to know he was thrilled I used his idea for the title of my project. Yep, I’m still freaked out about that!
When I couldn’t come up with a title for my second book, the true story of a homeless woman my husband brought home one night, I started taking naps, lots of them. After days of napping I dreamed I was being interviewed on a talk show and the host asked me what I thought of Sophie after she was living in our home for awhile. I answered, “She was still just the Stranger in My Recliner.” So it was.
Of course my children’s names came to me in dreams as well. LOL seriously!
There were no dreams involved in titling the forthcoming, Realize Your Writing Dreams. This title was a joint effort by my amazing writing group friends.
