What a crazy week we all have had! My heart hurts for Texas and for Boston.
I fell behind with the A-Z Challenge because of some unexpected writing responsibilities. Revision is just another step in the journey to publication. Unexpected revisions, once we have gotten over the shock surprise can be exciting.
This month I am participating in the A-Z Challenge.
My ‘R’ post is Revision
The definition:
1.) the act or process of revising or altering.
2.) The process of revising.
3.) A revises form or version. Something that has been rewritten.
I have been deep in a second round of revisions for my second non-fiction book for the past month. On Thursday, I got a request to stop my revisions on that book and to begin work on revising my third non-fiction book immediately.
I was stunned to say the least and not happy. By midnight last night that all changed when I fell in love with Sophie’s story and I am completely invested in getting it right, by May 11th…YIKES!!!
Revisions involve massive changes in your manuscript. Editing is more about fine-tuning your manuscript and getting the grammar right.
Before you start, you should have a detailed plan.
You should read the entire book through without taking any notes.
You should read it out- loud while taking notes, by hand in a notebook.
You will want to answer these questions: Are all of the characters and scenes necessary to move your story forward? Have all the questions a reader might have been answered? Does your story have continuity? Is the word count on target for your genre?
I like to make sure I have plenty of pens, pencils, highlighters, notebooks and sticky notes before I begin.
I also like to get plenty of sleep and make sure I take breaks to eat and exercise.
