About Laura Kaye:

The Interview:
Tell us about your latest release? What are you working on now?
I’d love to! My latest release is the second in my contemporary romance Heroes series, called One Night with a Hero. It features a military hero and is about how a one night stand turns into a lifetime love between two lonely, damaged people. Just loved writing that one! Right now, I’ve got a couple balls in the air: I’m finishing edits on the third book in Hearts of the Anemoi series, South of Surrender, and writing the third in my Vampire Warrior Kings series, which doesn’t yet have a title. 2013 is going to be BUSY!
Tell us about your childhood, the angels, ghosts and curses?
My family always believed in the supernatural. Growing up, stories about such things were commonplace at family gatherings. The ghosts stories and house hauntings stories in my family are too numerous to try to mention, but the angel and curse story go together. When my grandmother was pregnant with my mother, she believed that her mother-in-law put an evil eye curse on her because she didn’t like that my grandfather hadn’t married an Italian girl. All during the pregnancy (this is 1944-45, mind you), my grandmother had the sense that something was wrong and was more and more anxious about the baby. At one point, she made herself nearly sick with worry, and in the middle of the night she awoke to an angel hovering over the bottom of the bed. She told my grandmother the baby would be fine, and after that, my grandmother stopped worrying. My mother was born on May 1, 1945, a healthy baby girl, except she lacked an elbow joint in her right arm and had only four fingers on that hand. I can’t tell you how many times I heard these stories, and others, growing up.
Do you have a writing routine? A schedule?
I tend to write either in the evenings after the kids go to bed or during the day at Panera. Until December, I was working full-time so the daytime writing was hit or miss. But now I’m trying out writing full-time, so hopefully it’ll become more of a 9-5 routine. Otherwise, my writing goal each day is to write 2-3,000 words, which tells me about how long it should take me to draft a project.
What do you use to write? (PC, laptop etc..) Do you have a favorite tech toy?
Have laptop, will travel! That’s about as high tech as I get!
What is the last thing you read?
J.R. Ward’s Lover Reborn. I am a total Black Dagger Brotherhood fanatic!
You have a very impressive career will you share your publishing story with us?
Thank you! I wrote my first novel, the book that became Forever Freed, in the fall of 2008 and, in total newbie fashion, I started querying it to agents almost immediately. I got a lot of requests on the manuscript, but no takers, so I continued to revise it (I did so thoroughly twice) and started new projects, too. I got more requests on Forever Freed, but still couldn’t get an agent, so I started researching e-publishers and the very first one (The Wild Rose Press) I submitted it to signed it. Within a month or two, they also bought my second book, Hearts in Darkness. During the almost year I worked on edits of those books, I kept writing, so in the spring of 2011 when my first two books released, I sold a short story and two series in very quick succession, the short to Decadent Publishing, one series to Entangled (Anemoi) and the other to Harlequin Nocturne (Vampire Warrior Kings). Key to all this, I think, was the fact that I kept writing new stories while I was in those waiting/revising/editing periods, so all at once I had a bunch of sales and continuous new releases (4 in 2011, 5 in 2012, looks to be another 5 in 2013 so far). In all, I sold a total of 16 books before I got an agent, which finally happened in August of 2012.
What is your favorite TV indulgence?
Just one??? I enjoy reality shows like American Idol and the Biggest Loser and almost any supernatural series like The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, oooh and Game of Thrones!
Do you prefer camping or room service? Coffee or Tea? Wine or Beer?
