People often use the comment “What a small world”. It is true that technology can have you skyping with Pop-Pop in Timbuctoo in a matter of seconds however; this merely makes the world closer, not smaller.

The earthquake in Japan was world news in less than 10 minutes. The spontaneous uprisings in Egypt and other countries in the region were supposedly started via Facebook (we know now they had been planned for 2 years). How ever it happened the idea of 1000’s of people coming together through Facebook whether it was planned for 2 years or not is mind boggling.
I honestly started my blog a little over a year ago, to promote my book. It is so much more than that now. I was shy most of my life, dreading times like birthdays and weddings. I do not like being the center of attention. I also had a problem showing my work to anyone. Well blogging has certainly gotten me over that fear. I learned more about writing in my one year of blogging than I had learned in all those years in school. I have so many friends. I know people take issue with the fact that blog followers are not actual friends. I totally disagree. I recently met one of my friends and it truly was like running into an old friend. There was a real connection there.
Now, back to the universe.
I honestly feel if I did not text or have a Facebook account I would never speak with my kids or grandkids. Do not get me wrong I am quite proud of the way I just jump in and figure these things out. I do have to admit however; they are a major cause of stress in my life. Seriously you all know there have been times you wanted to toss that computer out the window or punch a hole in the wall. I predict computer rage will be a new…’condition’. Personally I have been reduced to tears when I have heard the word crashed.
It is true if you do not move with the times you will be left behind. Look at the businesses; the stubborn dinosaurs, like publishing. For many years these companies have gotten away with treating people horribly. It will be quite interesting to see them spend thousands and thousands of dollars on feasibility studies and to see what comes out at the other side.
While Kindles, Nooks and all the e-readers are all the rage at the moment. The e-reader is fantastic for our instant gratification and certainly makes sense for those who read for a living. I personally love books. I love having them in my home. I appreciate the art and design work that goes into each page, the cover and the back matter.
Lets face it there are times when nothing but a good book will do.
I am missing my kids and my grandkids. I miss all of those endless phone conversations with my grandkids laughing, or arguing in the background. I am missing their voices. It seems when we get together now there is nothing to talk about. We have already texted that the baby just said her first full sentence. I saw the video of my grand daughters softball game on u-tube, and I learned of doctor appointment, grades and new outfits on Facebook.
My one daughter says I am going through empty nest syndrome.
It is possible I do feel lonely sometimes. Not very often I am far too busy. I honestly believe I miss the art of conversation.
Favorite quote today: Uncertainty and mystery are energies of life. Do not let them scare you unduly, for they keep boredom at bay and spark creativity. ~R.I. Fitzhenry
When was the last time you had an endless conversation or mailed an actual letter?
