One thing I will never understand is why some writers (very few) are terrified of competition. It makes no sense. In the publishing business competition or competing story lines are gold. Just think vampires, zombies or romance books. There will never be enough to read and there will always be opportunities to create the next Walking Dead or Hunger Games.

Walking Dead

My daughter has read two romance novels a week since she was a teenager. Now a married mother of three she’s still reading romance novels voraciously.

If there was one piece of advice I could give every writer, author and blogger whether new or established it would be to share everything you know with writers that need help and support. Paying it forward feels really good.

When we stop competing and start connecting magic happens, I promise.

Happy writing,

Doreen

Join us Saturday, June 25 from 12-2pm as we celebrate seven talented local authors during the Doylestown Small Press Expo.

Doylestown Bookshop

16 South Main Street Doylestown Pa 18901

This event began as The Local Author Spotlight, where we celebrate and host a number of authors from a number of genres for a large group book signing event in our store. We believe that everyone’s voice should be heard, whether you are with a small publisher, are self-published or with a large publisher. We have re-branded this event, which occurs every June and November, as the Doylestown Small Press Expo because it has grown in quality and quantity. We don’t just give space to the authors, we give space to the publishers who support them and in turn support the written word in our community and beyond. We promote the event, its authors and sell their books on this day where we can truly celebrate them and the work they have accomplished.

  1. Hi Doreen! You always inspire me to keep moving forward. I started a small writer’s group, we haven’t met yet in person, but we have a group on Facebook. I was inspired by my experience with Listen To Your Mother and how support and connection can lift a soul, not competition. Some members are thinking of writing, some have intense stories brewing, I wanted to create a safe place for those first words to land. Thank you for always being a nurturing and encouraging voice. Wishing you a peace filled day!

  2. Many people (not just writers) are naturally competitive. You want to be the best and you don’t to give anyone a chance to beat you, so of course you’re not going to cooperate with other people. But as you said, in the writing business it’s rather silly. There’s plenty of opportunities and very little money anyway, so what are you fighting for? Heck, even if you help someone else succeed, being friends with a successful writer could prove very advantageous to you. 😉

  3. When I just started blogging, I felt insecure to share my work with others and felt in competition. Now I get it and don’t feel quite so insecure about my own work. I agree that we do need to help each other and pay it forward.

  4. If I worried about “competition” I’d never get anything done. People helped me when I was starting out in my writing career. It feels right to help newbies. The old saying about what goes around comes around is very true.
