More on Marketing/ Media Pitches

You’ve written the book, the proposal, the query, the synopsis, the marketing plan and yes, there is more. The media pitch or one sheet it what is used to try to entice a newspaper or magazine editor to write a feature, a TV producer to do a segment or a radio producer to do an interview with you.

Writing is hard

The first and most important thing you must remember is the editors and producers have no interest in your book or blog. Their only interest is their audience. With that in mind you will need to come up with a story idea that would be of interest to that media outlets entire audience.

Through researching and writing your book or blog what is the common theme? Have you become an expert on that topic? Perhaps you write book reviews on your blog. Have you considered pitching a summer reading list segment or article? Perhaps you write a blog on disabilities. Have you considered pitching a list of tips on traveling with a disability? My first book was the true story of my brother’s random road rage murder. I sadly learned everything there is to learn about road rage and consider myself an expert. I pitch tips on not becoming a victim of road rage and also tips on not becoming full of rage as a driver.  My second book is the true story of a homeless woman that my husband brought home one night and she stayed with us for nearly three years. I am now an expert on homelessness. The possibilities of ideas for stories to pitch are endless. You are a writer, of course you can come up with a few.

Remember; the buzz about you and your book should never come from you. The journalist and radio or TV hosts will mention your book and how to get it at the end of the article/interview. With the buzz coming from them, you and your book will gain immediate credibility.

At first, think small and local. Look up the websites for your local newspapers, TV and radio stations and look for their story idea or pitch submission guidelines. It may not be that easy to find but it is there.

 

Do the research on the media outlets you want to pitch. Read the paper, listen to the radio shows and watch the TV shows you are intending to pitch. Make sure they cover the kind of story you are pitching.

The best way to pitch the media is on the outlets website or by e-mail. It is a good idea to follow them on social media but don’t pitch them there.

Try to address it to a specific editor/producer/show etc…

Don’t be over formal.

You will probably have three sentences to grab their attention so start with your elevator pitch.

Add your story idea. Show them don’t tell them J you want them to visualize the segment. Relate the story to their audience.

Use bullet points to add 5 or 6 talking points/ suggestions

Next add why you are the best person for the interview adding your book/blog title and a brief synopsis.

A short bio and contact information.

Keep it short, concise and simple, no fluff. One page is sufficient.

Lori L. MacLaughlin traces her love of fantasy adventure to Tolkien and Terry Brooks, finding The Lord of the Rings and The Sword of Shannara particularly inspirational. She’s been writing stories in her head since she was old enough to run wild through the forests on the farm on which she grew up.

She has been many things over the years – tree climber, dairy farmer, clothing salesperson, kids’ shoe fitter, retail manager, medical transcriptionist, journalist, private pilot, traveler, wife and mother, Red Sox and New York Giants fan, muscle car enthusiast and NASCAR fan, and a lover of all things Scottish and Irish.

The Book

The Interview:

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on a dairy farm in northern Vermont, USA, and I’ve lived in Vermont all my life. I love the beauty of the state — its forests, mountains, and farmlands. I’ve always enjoyed the small-town feel, the moderate climate, and the distinct seasons, though at this point, winter and snow are not at the top of my favorites list. 

Did you grow up in a household that encouraged reading or writing?

Absolutely. My parents read to me all the time when I was young. They are great readers themselves. My mom loves mysteries and the old-time romances of Grace Livingston Hill and Emilie Loring. My dad has read tons of westerns. I think he has every Louis L’Amour book ever written. My grandparents were readers, too. I distinctly remember visiting their houses as a kid and being impressed by their shelves upon shelves of books. Writing was encouraged, as well. My grandmother wrote columns for her hometown Fulton (NY) Patriot newspaper for years.

Do you have a designated writing space? A schedule?

Yes, I do have a writing space. I turned what used to be a small bedroom/office into a little library with my computer desk in one corner and bookshelves along the walls. It’s a cozy space with a window that looks out into the woods behind the house. The only disadvantage to this is that I sometimes get distracted by the various birds flitting through the trees and the antics of the squirrels and chipmunks. I used to have a writing schedule, but that has pretty much gone out the door over the past few months as I worked on getting my first novel published. After the blog tour this month and the A to Z Challenge in April, I hope to be able to spend more time writing and finishing up edits on Book 2.

What was the last book you read?

This World Bites (Loni Townsend.) It’s a funny story about zombies, vampires, and an unusual group of people led by Cera, a woman with elemental powers. The group travels from world to world, searching for a cure for Cera’s father. Their encounters with the local inhabitants, and the dark and deadpan humor made me laugh and grossed me out at the same time.

Share your journey to publication:

My journey to publication has spanned so many years — years spent writing, revising, and writing some more. My story grew and evolved as I did. As I matured as a person, my characters matured in depth, my story in scope. Words about life and love and loss ring so much truer once you’ve experienced those things for yourself.Years of intertwined day-to-day living and writing as a hobby culminated in the decision, about a year ago, to take a leap of faith into the world of self-publishing. I’ve spent the last year learning about author platforms, social media, ISBNs, book cover design and layout, and all the many facets of the trade. I can’t count the times I felt completely overwhelmed by all the things I had to learn. I’ve had my share of setbacks. But I never gave up. As of February 27, 2015, I am a published author. Woo hoo!

Do you have a book trailer?

I have two of them, actually. The first is about the overall story, but I realized afterward that it didn’t include the romantic elements integral to the story. Partly to remedy this, and partly for fun, I made another one that focused on the main character, Tara, and her internal struggles with love, loss, and new possibilities.

What are you writing now?

I’ve been working on the second book in the series, Trouble By Any Other Name, which is in the final editing stage. It’s about Tara’s struggle to discover who and what she really is and to destroy the evil Being that is trying to steal her magic and escape through her dreams. I hope to have it published by the end of the year.

What is your favorite music genre?

I enjoy pop rock the most, but I’ll listen to anything other than screaming headbanger stuff and rap. Rap will make me get up and leave the room.

Coffee, tea, wine or whiskey?

Milk for me, please. I’ll always be a dairy girl.

Public Relations (PR) Part 4- Writing a book as a PR tool

Publishing a book has never been easier and there are so many reasons to write a book these days other than the obvious of course which is because you are a writer and want a career as an author.

Books are becoming the new business card and can work for any business, product, non-profit or special event as a branding and PR tool. A book can generate income in many other areas besides book sales, speaking, consulting and services to name a few.

Once you have a book that has been well written you will gain immediate professional credibility.

50 % of all books written are ghost written. 80% of all non-fiction books are ghostwritten. If writing is not your strong suit consider hiring a writing coach or a ghost writer.

Remember:

Public Relations is not selling. Of course we all want to sell our books and a really good Marketing Plan that includes a good PR plan will help you achieve that goal but remember, PR is about goodwill and the audience.

As authors we always need to keep goodwill and audience in mind while we are interacting on social media. If a journalists is considering covering your event or writing an article on you he/she will Google you as will a TV or radio producer.  Don’t post anything you don’t want them to see.

That said; it is okay to occasionally be ‘controversial’ for the sake of discussion or debate but try to maintain professionalism

Auto Correct is a nightmare for me and I am sure it is for you too. As writers we have to be extra diligent to ensure our words no matter where we put them are grammatically correct. I struggle with this…

Public Relations PR Part 2/ Press Releases

Just when you thought writing the book was the hard part you were told you had to write a synopsis, then an outline, a proposal and the hardest of all a query letter.  You finish all of those and breathe a big sigh of release only to find out you need to write marketing, advertising and PR plans and those include writing press releases and media pitches.

Writing is hard

If you have the budget to hire a professional to write and submit your press releases for you, they are well worth the money. If a professional isn’t in your budget no fears, you can write your own.

The fact that you wrote and published a book is not ‘newsworthy’ to most media outlets. They are looking for news that is of interest to their entire audience.

The main thing you have to remember when writing a press release is you are informing the audience of something important to them, you are not promoting your book (that would be considered advertising.) What expertise or insight have you gained from writing your book? If you wrote a book about your transition from the corporate world to owning a bakery perhaps your angle could be ‘the pros and cons of opening a small business in (name of town,) or tips on how to have a memorable celebration. The possibilities are endless but you should choose 2 or 3 and stick with them.

The second thing to remember is keep it concise and professional. Use simple words.

The third thing is to send it to the right place. Do the research. Make sure the publication is right for ‘your news.’ If it isn’t something their readers would be interested in, you are wasting your time and theirs.  My suggestion is to start small, think close to home. Your small hometown paper, magazine or newsletter is a great place to start. On most media websites you can find a place to submit press releases. Does your alma mater have a newspaper or newsletter, does your church? Once you have submitted to these local publications submit to 3 or 4 city papers closest to home. You can expand from there.

There are web based businesses that are promising to distribute your press release, for a fee. It is time consuming but you are better off looking up the publications and submitting to them yourself.

Do not submit press releases to the same publication more than once a month unless the news is really big.

Tips on format:

Your headline has to be fabulous and should be no more than 8 words. You only have about 15 words to grab an editor’s attention so the headline counts big-time.

Next you want to put your first choice for the date you want the release to be published. Most people put, For Immediate Release.

Next you want to write an introductory paragraph. Press releases are written in third person. If you are announcing a book event, mention that and the host and any other authors involved. Think hooking the reader here.

Next you want to go more into ‘the news of your release,’ answering the who, what, why, when and where questions. Remember you cannot ‘sell’ in a press release so don’t mention where your book can be purchased. You want the ‘news’ of the release to be so good that the reader will go look for your book.

A short bio comes next and then you want to list your contact information. Let the editor know what contact information you want published and what information you don’t want published. I usually list only an e-mail publicly. If it is for a book event you can list the phone number of the book store or wherever the event is being held.

When a publication does publish your press release, thank them, promote them and share on social media.

What in the world did we do with our time before social media? I for one was definitely more productive writing wise and my house was much cleaner than it is now. I have a feeling that social media killed most of the daytime soap operas. Why watch scripted on T.V. when we can scroll through non-stop reality.

Whatever negative side effects social media might have it does have equal and opposite positive effects as well. For me I have never felt so much a part of so many completely different communities as I do now. Writers/Bloggers truly are the most supportive, genuine and friendly people I have ever known.

Because it is a new year I thought this would be a good time to share some social media etiquette and tips that I have learned over the years, some of them the hard way.

It is social media not sell media. There are many companies out there that will take your money and instruct you to auto post the same posts across all of your social media platforms. Posts like ‘BUY my book’ ‘Must Read 500; 5 star reviews.’ Then there are those direct messages you receive thirty seconds after you follow someone that requests you to, buy my book, like my page, follow my blog and don’t forget to fave and share this message. These companies will fill your head with numbers that sound important but they are useless. Social media is about being social, making real connections. Auto posting/ constant selling will leave people thinking you are lazy and unapproachable and they will keep scrolling.

Once you post it, it cannot be erased. In 2015 this is still important. If you are not sure about posting or responding to something take the time to think about it before you post or respond.

Ignore Posts that offend you. It would be great if we never had to lay eyes on or hear anything that offends us but when it comes to social media we are going to see plenty. It always feels good to be part of a ‘do good’ mob but choose your mobs wisely. Don’t take someone’s dislike of children or pets so personally and just scroll on. Trust me your mood will be better if you just ignore and scroll on. If it persists, and you can’t seem to ignore the offensive posts, hide them, disable notifications from that person or unfriend them.

You owe no one an explanation to unfriend/unfollow.  There is never a need to post things like ‘I am cleaning up my friend list.’ Just unfollow quietly and move on.

In 2015 it is still a bad idea to vague post, chronically complain, overshare and post in clumps, frequently. ‘I am so upset’ ‘Some people need to just shut up and you know who you are.’ If you share someone’s post or an article always write something personal about it such as why you liked it or didn’t like it. I need to take my own advice on this one.

Do not post spoilers. Be considerate of our friends in different time zones. If you cannot wait to talk about that winner or scene, take it private.

Limit rants. Sometimes a good rant can be healthy and prompt positive conversation. It is a good idea to only post them occasionally.

Never use more than two hashtags in one post. Trust me.

The buzz about you, your book or your blog should NEVER come from you.  This is simple; you only gain credibility when other people post about your work.  That doesn’t mean you cannot share exciting information or good news. There is a big difference between good news and overselling.

If you wouldn’t say it to someone in person don’t say it on social media. It is a good idea to stop and think before reacting on social media. There is a way to say and mean what you want to say without being mean. We are writers, right?

It is okay to discuss politics and religion. Discuss is the key word here. We should always respect each other’s views or beliefs even if they are different from our own, especially if we have no idea what is behind those views. Discussion and debate are healthy. Headlines and talking points are annoying.

Writing Spaces/ Routines and Rituals

When I was writing my first book, just a few years ago all I had to write with, was a PC. We kept the computer in one of our extra bedrooms. Back then I had a writing schedule and I didn’t seem to have any trouble sticking with that schedule. I would get up an hour earlier each morning, make a cup of tea and I would sit down and write for an hour, before I went to work. I would spend another hour, writing before I went to bed at night and on Saturdays the whole day was dedicated to writing.

Since then a few things have changed. I now have a dedicated office space that I rarely use. I can use my laptop, notebook, IPad or phone to write anywhere. With all of the choices I have and as connected as I am I seem to be failing at sticking to my weekly word counts. Social media was shiny and sparkled so bright I had no choice but to follow along. None of us had any idea what a time sucker social media would turn out to be. It’s not all bad, it just requires discipline.

With a second book coming out this year and a third one to finish, a full time and a part time job and a large family, this year I need to get serious about getting back to scheduling dedicated working time and sticking with the schedule.

It’s time to dust my office. Better yet I think restyling my space might provide some inspiration.  It is time to revive my writing playlist and stop sitting on my sofa thinking I can watch a movie and concentrate on grammar at the same time.

I listen to music, drink tea or wine depending on the hour and my favorite writing snacks are chocolate (of course,) cheese and crackers or veggies and dip. If I find myself not able to concentrate I play a couple of levels of Scrabble Blast, the only online game I play.

Writer’s Conferences

For someone who spends most of their life surrounded by four walls either in front of a computer screen or with their head buried in one book after another, venturing outside of those cozy, boxy walls can be frightening. The thought of leaving our comfort zones to attend a writer’s conference in person with other actual human beings can be as uncomfortable as fingernails on a chalkboard.

Just registering to attend a writer’s conference can be expensive. When you add on classes or workshops, dinner events, travel expenses, hotels and meals the costs can quickly make attending a financial struggle.

Are these conferences worth attending?

My opinion is yes, absolutely.

If you have chosen or you are considering choosing writing as a career, writing is your business. For any type of business to be successful there must be investments made in that business.

Reasons to attend:

  • You will get first hand information from publishers, editors and agents that you will be able to use immediately to further your writing career.
  • To learn the latest publishing trends and other information about the business side of writing and publishing.
  • The opportunity to meet with and pitch literary agents in person, they attend conferences looking for talent.
  • A chance to network with other writers some will be ahead of you in their careers and some will be behind you.
  • Learn about freelance opportunities.
  • Be inspired by your peers, the presenters and the speakers.
  • Social media is a good tool for writers but face to face communication with other writers, people who ‘get’ you is priceless.
  • Because we writers spend so much time alone the face to face communication with like minded souls at a conference is priceless.
  • The thought of attending can be intimidating especially if you are shy but if you can push yourself out of your comfort zone for just a few days you will make valuable contacts, gain experience, acquire knowledge and make lifelong friends.

*If you are not going to make the effort to speak to and get to know people, to put yourself out there and network then I wouldn’t spend the money to attend.*

To prepare for a conference you should have plenty of business cards made. Postcards are also good handouts and great for promoting your blog. If you have a finished manuscript, make several copies of the manuscript, several copies of your query and several of your proposal. You never know who you may run in to, in the hall. You should also practice your elevator speech, three sentences on what your book is about, a beginning middle and an end because you never know who may be riding the elevator with you. Dress comfortably but professionally.

Before you attend look up and learn as much as you can about the facilitators of any workshops or break-out sessions you are planning to attend. Write down any questions you have for them. Look up any agents, who will be attending, learn what genres they represent, a bit about their agency and who they represent. Check to see if any of your social media or blog friends are attending and make plans to meet-up with them.

Find out if the conference is holding any contests. These are usually planned well in advance, so check early and enter!

If you feel like you are too shy to get anything out of the conference take a friend with you.

If the cost is just too prohibitive for you to attend a big conference look into writing workshops being held in your area. Check your local universities or community colleges they often offer community learning opportunities that are affordable.

If you happen to live in the Philadelphia, South Jersey or Delaware area the Press Club of Pa. is offering a series of workshops for writers. The cost is only $25.00. There is more information on these workshops at the end of this post.

I am feeling so fragmented today. It was my first full week back to work ( I worked on Labor Day ) after an awesome vacation. As hard as I tried to be organized, by Wednesday it all fell apart and here I am on Friday scrambling to check all the boxes so I can relax and start my weekend.

Are you a Garth Brooks fan? I am so excited about his comeback tour. I was one of those people that slept on a sidewalk in Philadelphia all those years ago to get [good] tickets to see him. I was confused at first by the new digital format but this video sort of helped with that. I think it might be awesome. I wonder if Trisha will be offering her music on the space too.

A few of my grandchildren started school on Wednesday, two others will start on Monday and Adrianna will start kindergarten next Tuesday. Is it me or do our schools in the Philadelphia area start late? I do love that the kids don’t go back until after Labor Day.

My teaching schedule starts with the first of the Press Club workshop series, a social media class on September 27th.  The committee and I have been working on these for months and they are really coming together.

My author schedule starts on September 19th with an author panel and book signing at The Boscov’s Department Store at Granite Run Mall. I am looking forward to spending time with the other awesome authors.

When we got back from our Florida trip last week (with 5 grandkids) I had the same nightmare for three nights in a row. I dreamed my eight-year-old granddaughter, Avery was drowning. It was terrifying. I was afraid to look up the meaning of the dream. Apparently when you dream a child is drowning it means you are feeling the end of a deep emotional connection. That made perfect sense because she was the youngest on the trip and we were worried about her getting homesick and being left out by the older kids. Neither happened thank goodness but I did feel very connected to her and all of the kids. Do you believe in dream interpretation?

There is more sad news from Hollywood. I always found Joan Rivers hysterical. That said, more recently on her show Fashion Police, even I thought she could be a bit harsh. No matter what you thought of her she was the first women to have a nighttime show of her own and she paved the way for many female comediennes. My favorite thing about her was her refusal at all costs to be politically correct which made her, in my eyes and in spite of her exterior a very ‘real’ person inside.

The real news has been brutally sad too. I am usually pretty immune to it but these be-headings of journalists are so heartbreaking. I cannot stop thinking of their family and friends and the grief they are feeling.

Just thinking about this next election season is making me nauseous.

It has been quite awhile since I have felt secure, not just in my writing but in life. It has been a tough two years. My second book is over a year late. I am finally getting back on track and I reached the half-way point in the editing for The Stranger in My Recliner. I must be feeling extra secure because I committed to have it finished by the end of the month. That wasn’t enough so I decided to enter the A-to-Z Challenge for the third –year.

More Twitter Trash Talking brings about the return of Celebrity Boxing…

The other day instead of writing, I was trolling twitter. I follow Tori Spelling McDermott and saw she tweeted a comment about a tattoo her husband Dean got in a sensitive area to surprise her. Innocently (really) I clicked over to his feed to see if there was a photo. What I saw was a lot of twitter trash talk.

I know I don’t know these people in ‘real’ life but I did watch every episode of their reality show and I adore this couple and their children. I like them.
