After beating cancer, miraculously three times over the last three years my father died of pneumonia three weeks ago today. Thank you all so much for your prayers and healing thoughts over the past few years. You all really do make me smile. I feel blessed to have had him for an extra three years and blessed that I spent that last week by his side talking, laughing and crying. I was able to say goodbye and for me that was comforting. I am going to miss him.

Hospice, what does that mean?
“If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together… there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you.” A.A. Milne
One night while caring for my failing mother-in-law I experienced an episode of utter frustration and helplessness. She was experiencing night terrors, sundowners they called it. Just when I didn’t think I could handle another second of not being able to comfort her and feeling very sorry for myself, exhausted, afraid and alone, a TV priest spoke directly to me. He said, “How dare you complain about caring for your elderly. When, will you ever be so close to someone who is about to enter Heaven?” Something came over me when I heard those words. I was suddenly calm, and no longer afraid of death or the process of dying. I felt honored to be caring for this lovely woman who no doubt was going to Heaven. I said a prayer, asking for the energy to continue providing loving care.

Last weekend I went to North Carolina to bring my friend Tina home. Tina has been down there for four months taking care of our friend Joelle who is battling cancer. On Saturday night, Joelle’s church, New Horizons in Durham was hosting a concert/fundraiser for her. Actually five churches from the Durham area came together as one, in support of Joelle. It was beautiful.

What do you do when your friend or loved one has cancer?
So many of you have been praying, sending healing thoughts for and asking me what you can possibly do to help my friend Joelle and her family.
I often wondered why our God gives some of us heavier crosses to bare than he gives others’. Joelle is one such person. She has lost loved ones to violence and illnesses. Refusing to allow herself to be stuck in sorrow, she continued to be supportive and to stand by her friends, family, church, community and even complete strangers.

Right before we left for Florida I found out my book was one of the top one-hundred items at Walmart. It was number four to be exact. That news inspired me to get a lot of editing done while I was away.

A little trip, the beach and those damn Yankee’s..
Friday Fragments are bits and pieces of your week that are usually brief; too short for a stand-alone post, but too good to discard. Collect humorous observations, “Heard” items, and other small gems (hint: a notebook is helpful 🙂 and put them together in a Friday Fragments post.
Friday Fragments was hosted all summer by Unknown Mami (thank you so much) but they are now back in the hands of Mrs. 4444. If you have Fragmentsto share, please join us…

Good Orderly Direction
My husband uses this little phrase quite often. I have been thinking about it a lot lately.

My latest blog post on Women on the Verge…
During the cold, dreary winter months, I keep depression away by planning every detail of my family’s summer adventures. From our annual family reunion/ beach week, romantic weekend getaways, writer’s retreats, daytrips to amusement parks and motorcycle runs for good causes, I am busy inside, researching the next best fun thing to do, while the snow is falling outside.
