Friday Favorites, Flops and Food

I know its cliché, but the weeks seem to be floating by leaving me feeling like I’m missing something or not living life to the fullest. One of my goals for this year is to slow my days down and to be present and mindful of each, and every minute. Another goal is to find something to be grateful for in each season. Keeping track of my favorites, flops and good food weekly has been a great exercise in consistent blogging, and a way to remember and be grateful.

Favorites

My first favorite memory of the week is my #5 granddaughter, Adriana Jean turned 10! Everyone says where does the time go but seriously I clearly remember anxiously awaiting my daughters scheduled c-section date. Adriana couldn’t wait and decided to come early creating a chaotic emergency c-section.

Her and her Mama had a lengthy hospital stay. My first memory with the baby in the hospital is picking her up because she was crying and sitting on the edge of the bed. I had so much trouble soothing her. My daughter was flipping through tv channels and put on the Phillies game. The baby turned her head towards the tv and was so content watching the game with us.

We’re a baseball and softball family but me and my daughter were hoping for a girly girl this time.

Adriana’s older sister Allyson, granddaughter #1 is a talented athlete.

We did get our wish and more. Although our 10-year-old plays softball, she also sings, dances, and is quite the fashionista.

She was upset when big sis smooshed chocolate cake on her face but was a good sport and let me get a picture.

Grandchildren are such a blessing. I am so grateful for each, and every one of them. If only they would slow down and be little longer.

We started season 2 of Blacklist. My husband said it’s now his second favorite show. Billions is still #1.

I was surprised but happy to hear that Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart came in second for Sunday nights ratings. Game of Thrones was #1.

Flops

The flops won this week. Ugh.

I didn’t finish any of my writing projects. Staying positive, I’ll be working on, or should I say writing most of the weekend.

What a stormy week we’ve had here in the Philadelphia area.

We do consider ourselves lucky because some parts of the country have been devastated by these storms and tornados. My heart goes out to them.

A few years ago, I was involved in an accident and suffered a TBI and a pinched nerve in my neck. Something has woken that nerve up and ouch! My husband was given CBD oil for back pain. I tried it and it helped for the 5 minutes my husband was applying it to my neck.

That was so disappointing!

Ice and Advil are keeping the pain under control. Do you have any go to remedies for nerve pain?

The Devon Horse Show is something I enjoy every year, but my schedule was crazy, and I couldn’t go this year.
How nice though to see this painting that Dori Spector created live. She does this every year during Ladies Hat Day. I was so excited to see local milliner Zoya Egan featured in the painting.

Food

Chicken salad is a great food to have on hand for Spring and Summer lunches, or dinners when it gets too hot to cook. It’s messy to make but the taste makes up for the mess.

Chicken Salad

2 boneless chicken breasts
1 can of chicken broth
1 stick of butter
Garlic clove crushed
Salt, pepper
2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
3 tablespoons chopped red onion
¼ cup of chopped apple
¼ cup of sliced grapes
¼ cup of chopped celery
1 cup of mayonnaise
1 tbsp. yellow mustard
Nuts (if you want)
Sliced or candied cranberries (if you want)
I sometimes add a bit of sweet yellow pepper
Dash of celery salt

Boil the chicken for 10 minutes, then chop it. Heat a stick of butter in frying pan. Add crushed garlic. Heat through and add chicken, heating it through. Don’t let it brown. Put all contents of pan into a large bowl. Add all dry ingredients and toss until well mixed. Mix mayo, mustard and vinegar in a small bowl. Add to chicken and mix well. Chill for an hour.

It can be served on a slice of lettuce with fruit, on toasted bread or with crackers.

Enjoy!
Have a blessed weekend,
Doreen

  1. Good morning, Doreen! Sorry to hear about your neck and back issues. I wish I had a remedy for you. I can’t believe it is June already. I feel like I haven’t accomplished much of anything; no writing done and I still am unemployed. My autistic son just turned 18, so I really need to start jumping through the required hoops to get him county services now that he is an adult. It is all so very overwhelming, I feel the days slipping away. Time to step into my garden to re-center myself.

    1. I have an autistic grandson (secondary to another syndrome) who is 21. He is graduating school this month and what a panic.
My daughter jumped through all the hoops and he has services now. Good luck to you and your son, I hope it all works out. A garden does cure a lot of pains:)
