Blog Branding

Branding is not a new term or idea however, in the past it was a concept used by those in the advertising and marketing industries to raise consumer awareness of a product, service or company.

A-Z Kleenex photoLately, the concept has exploded into the mainstream. It seems every student, mommy, grandparent, dog, cat, writer, and politician; heck, anyone with a blog these days needs a brand.

A brand is a name, term, design, symbol or jingle that identifies you, your goods or services as distinct from those of other sellers. [Wikipedia]

When I started my blog three years ago, it never occurred to me to have a plan. This startles me a bit now because I normally don’t load the dishwasher without a detailed plan. I didn’t give target audiences, themes or schedules a first thought let alone a second thought.

The reason I never considered a plan is because I started my blog to journal my writing journey and keep up to date with my grandchildren.

Fast forward to today, I’ve become a published author with a second book due out later this year, the owner of a marketing company and a freelance journalist.

Help I need a brand!

I found some tips at http://www.brandyourself.com

I’ve learned that I am off to a good start because my name, book title and blog title come up in Google searches.

*Can I explain what I do and why I do it in 30 seconds or less?

*Do I keep quality vs. quantity in mind when posting?

*Do I appear confident?

*What have I done that the average person hasn’t?

*Before someone buys what I’m selling I have to offer them something worth their time.

*Personal relationships are important.

*Be trustworthy. Appropriately cite, credit and list where you obtained your information.

*Am I authentic and humble?

*Be consistent. Write what you know or what you want to learn.

* Am I consistent?

*Am I taking risks?

It looks like I have my work cut out for me. How about you, have you considered your brand?

What have you learned about me during your visit here?

  • Great post, Doreen! I have really worked hard to develop branding recently, but before that it wasn’t always easy. It was such a big decision to publish a book – it almost seemed to be tempting fate to look too far ahead! Now I wish I’d had a clearer plan, but I’m thrilled with everything I’ve learned and the people I found along the way.

    Good luck with the challenge!
    My best,
    Terri

  • I’m happy to have found you again! I found you two years ago when I first did the A to Z Challenge. With Blogger problems I lost a lot of blogs that I followed. Looking forward to more of your posts!

  • I keep waffling on branding for Sanity’s Overrated. On the one hand, I want more people to enjoy my blog and I want comments. On the other hand, I know that I’m afraid of success. It paralyzes me and I end up imploding. Still thinking on it.

As for what I’ve learned of you during my visit… I’ve learned that you’re always working and changing and that you are someone I’m glad to get to know. 🙂 (And I still need to e-mail you regarding your book!)
