Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

Our Twitter hashtag is #IWSG

I’m sorry September it isn’t personal.

No matter how hard I try to keep from getting behind in my writing over the summer, I get behind. Every year on September 1, I feel anxious, overwhelmed and like a failure.

I do feel all of those things today but I’m also giving myself a big fat pass.

It occurred to me yesterday that while I was sitting on the beach a few weeks ago I had the best ideas for a novel I’ve been outlining for a few months. The characters, scenes and location came to me so easily. Of course I didn’t write any of it down. I do remember most of it and if I get stuck I think I’ll head back to the beach with a notebook or at least my phone this time.

What was different about that beach visit on that day was I completely unplugged for the entire day.

My husband and I both left our phones behind. We talked, napped and daydreamed. I realize now that we both desperately needed that break. Moving forward I’m going to consider the summer my charger. It will be time well wasted. I will however make a point of carrying an old fashioned pen and notebook wherever I go.

Once we got in the car to head home both of our voicemails were full.

Our grandson (15), who lives with us and did not want to go to the beach that day broke his bedroom doorknob and got trapped in his room, my husband who works at a car dealership had issues with a vehicle delivery that didn’t go well and a publisher I work with needed an immediate answer about an illustration for one of my clients books.

We wanted to scream.

One by one we called everyone. My husband’s delivery issue was handled satisfactorily by a coworker. Our grandson called a relative that lives close by and was rescued (but shut the door and was trapped again,) and the publisher called the illustrator. What a relief to be able to laugh about all the drama we missed.

Do you take time to recharge your creative batteries? Do you feel guilty when you do?

Doreen

The End Is Near…

What is it about the fall that has me scrambling to finish everything I ever started and never finished? I know the answer is, because the end is near. The end of the year that is, and my goals are up there hanging on my office wall (the office I don’t write or work in) letting me know I’m about to fail.

I only set 10-goals for myself each New Year and I usually do pretty well, this year not so much. I’m going to give myself a pass and change up my plan a bit. In the mean time I will keep writing and moving forward. There is still plenty of time to catch up and there is all that writing fuel (candy) to look forward to this month.

Imagine That…#MondayMotivation

Imagine That…

Imagine that we American women united so no person or organization could control us by dividing us. Imagine that we actually did something other than persist. Imagine us coming together to solve problems. Imagine we built a bridge on what we have in common and our differences washed away under that bridge. Imagine that…

Imagine that on the topic of:

Schools- We agree we want the very best educational system for our children. We agree that every child has the right to an education regardless of race, religion, sex or disabilities. Imagine that we got together in our small towns and our cities and created a plan, we could make our school boards, administrators and educators accountable for every cent

Kindness is Sending a Bowl of Berries…

Kindness

Those that know me best know that I’ve been preaching kindness pretty much since I started talking. It is a new year and a good time for all of us to do a little soul searching and a lot of kindness generating. The ugliness I have seen over the past six-months has been overwhelming. We all need to take a good long look in the mirror and decide if we like who we see looking back at us. Are we telling little girls who to be or are we showing them by example?

Some psychologists believe that ‘being nice’ isn’t really so nice after all. They believe being nice actually comes from a fear.

Keep It Kind…

Keep It Kind

A couple of years ago around this time of year I challenged myself to make it through one week without thinking, saying or doing anything unkind. The challenge also included performing at least one random act of kindness per day.

The reason I entered that challenge was because I was full of anxiety and upset with people that were preaching and peddling kindness but only with those that agreed with and thought like them. Basically that meant only when it was easy for them to be kind.
