Kick in the afterburners…

During the month of April I am participating in the A to Z Blogging Challenge. You can find out more about that here:

It is also the first Wednesday of the month and that means it is time for a meeting of the Insecure Writers Support Group. You can find out more about that fabulous group here:

Today is the one year anniversary of me leaving full-time gainful employment for the insecurities of becoming a full- time writer. If I’ve learned one thing over this year it is that to be a work at home full-time writer takes a lot of effort, so that is my word for the letter E:

A simple definition of effort is- it is a conscious exertion of power. A serious attempt to do something, hard work, energy used to do something.

Effort is conscious. You have a choice to have it or not have it. Think about a 5k runner or a climber. Have you ever watched them turn on their afterburners when the end is in sight? Sure when you are close to achieving a goal adrenaline can kick in and push you forward. How do you muster up enough effort to get yourself within reach of your goal?

Do you know exactly what you need to do to get to the finish line, to your goal? It is impossible to get to a new place if you have no idea how to get there. You need a plan. It’s funny once you have a clear plan, know where you want to be and have figured out what you need to do to get there, your afterburners will kick in and carry you effortlessly to the finish line. You simply need the effort to start.

What helps you muster up effort when you need it most?

I am thrilled to be one of AJ’s wHooligans! We will be watching!

  • Effort is an understatement! Writing takes you entire heart and then some. Good luck!
    #IWSG 😉

  • Since retiring from my “real job” and taking up writing full time, I seem to actually fear not having some writing project on the front burner at all times. This alone keeps me writing and developing new ideas, maybe too many at times. The goal is always to share my writing, and to that end I have succeeded.

As for #IWSG Day, having my goals comes with doubts at times. But I am willing to begin each day with a positive attitude. That, and coffee!

  • There’s no substitute for hard work. Unfortunately, people want to get to their goals without it.

  • A whole year. That’s awesome!

It’s all about motivation for me. If I’m motivated, nothing in the verse can keep me from my goal. The issue is when I lose motivation.

  • Reading blog posts like this help! 🙂 I love seeing/hearing people encourage one another!

Also, congrats on the year! I hope you have accomplished everything you had hoped to in this year! 🙂

  • I’m going to check out the insecure writers group! Thanks.

  • Good luck with your plan to be a full time writer. I’ve been that since 2012. Good thing I have a pension to fall back on.

  • Lynn:

You need a plan. Yes, I do. I was derailed while recovering from two shoulder surgeries. It’s been a year and finally, I’ve recovered sufficiently I can sit at the keyboard and compose. As I look around our LA VITA (our sailboat and home) I see hard evidence of neglect. So, time to create a new plan with deadlines and measurable goals. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Hi Doreen!
    Congrats on the one-year anniversary!
    Effort = forward movement = productivity = success. It’s a chain reaction.
You will never lose if you put in the effort.
Also a reminder that Effort works hand-in-hand with Time.
Happy IWSG Day + E-post Day!
