How Healthy Is The Financial Path You Are On…

More than anything I wanted to leave my safe and steady full time job for the glamour of owning, my own business and writing full time. When I did just that last April I quickly realized it would be awhile before I would once again have a safe and secure feeling regarding my finances and the glamour moments are few and far between.

Writing is hard

I thought it would be a good idea to make an appointment with a financial planner. Being a midlife woman I knew I needed to up my retirement savings and at the same time I needed to know what debt I needed to pay down.

The appointment with the planner lasted about 30 minutes and he talked down to me the entire 30-minutes. He asked for a hefty retainer. I told him I needed to discuss it with my husband and he shooed me out the door.

A few days later I was introduced to a website, SUM180. I was honestly hesitant. Once on the site I felt comfortable. These are certified financial planners and they specialize in assisting women. They know what women think, need and buy.

SUM180 is a radically different kind of service with one goal: to make financial planning simple, affordable, and even fun – for every woman, wherever she is on her financial journey.

  1. It sounds good, Doreen, as I am always skeptical about any financial planner. WE just went to one who helps my entire family; we had never been to one. Right now? Tough time. But perhaps I’ll try this out instead. Thanks for introducing it.

  2. Sounds like a great service. I think de-personalizing it would almost make me be more honest than I would to someone looking at me from across the desk.

Best of luck on your new endeavor.

  3. It’s important to get help. I have had a planner for many years and so has my husband. Now we have two-his and mine. It’s always a good thing to see how they compare.

  4. Planning is so important. Sometimes we are so busy with our biz and life, we forget to do this. We always stop and re-look at our financial planning periodically as your priorities and needs change as you age. This site sounds wonderful as it seems to focus on making financial planning easy and not something to be afraid of.

  5. I have never heard of anything like this. I just received a small inheritance from my parent’s estate that I want to protect and invest wisely. I will check them out. Thanks for the information.

  6. Hi Doreen, thanks for some good information and tips. My financial planner’s tag is #everyoneneedsaplan and it is so true. Our future depends on our financial situation to have a comfortable lifestyle. Thank you for writing about your experience.

  7. I will definitely have to check that out. My son-in-law is a financial planner, but I certainly couldn’t (wouldn’t?) share my financial info with him… though I’m sure he’s fabulous. I like the idea of this being pretty much anonymous. Thank you!

  8. I have to check this out. Our investments guy is not someone I like or trust. Hubby says, “Find someone else and tell me why you like them.” This may just be the thing to help me see if our advise is sound. Thanks.
