First Campaign Challenge…
My entry for the first platform building campaign led by: http://rachaelharrie.blogspot.com
The door swung open, again. I thought about the patch job I would have to
do. Without a doubt the door knob punctured the sheetrock.
The hair on the back of my neck was wet. My heart was beating fast, I felt the
vibrations in my throat. I repeated silently,
over and over it was just the wind.
Every scary movie I had ever seen was stuck on
surround sound and constant re- play in my mind. I thought about the blonde in every horror
movie that slinks down the hall towards the …whatever swung the door open. Cue the creepy music as she tip toes down the
long hall. We scream at the TV “GO BACK
YOU IDIOT.” Dumb blonde never listens
and always ends up sliced and diced.
This is B.S. I told myself as I grabbed a full glass
of water from my nightstand [my weapon.] I tip toed towards the silence in my
living room. I gasped. Hundreds of wolf spiders of every shape and hairy
size covered my living room floor. I knew I was
in the midst of a nightmare. Fear of spiders is synonymous with having an
overbearing mother. The door swung shut.

Wolf spiders are awful. They are mean and aggressive and I don’t care that they are lots smaller than my foot………they are mean, mean, mean and I’m sure they want to eat me anytime I see one.
EEEEK! Spiders! Oh wait…it’s just a nightmare. You did a very good job. The moment the MC grabbed her weapon of choice, I wanted to scream, “You know what’s about to happen! Don’t do it!” lol!!!
All in all, very nice job.
Very clever. Hadn’t a clue where you were headed. Well done!
Patricia T.
Loving that second to last line. Great voice!
ACK! Spiders creep me out, and wolf spiders are the worst. I swear they jump. Nice piece, I won’t be able to sleep without a light on later.
Eeeeeeek. It better be just a nightmare. All those spiders? *shudder*
Well done!
Any spiders to me are awful let alone a wolf spider.
Have a nice day.
Yvonne.
Eeek! I couldn’t take it. Ew, just me and spiders and oh man, you put me right in the thick of ot. Good job.
Spiders, what a nightmare! I like the way you started it. Good set up.
HA! How many times have I put a hole in the damn sheetrock! lol
Loved that beginning!
Oh that was creepy!
LOL! I loved the line about how a fear of spiders is a sign of an overbearing mother! Well done!
Ahh the mother, it’s always the mother. I liked this. Mine is #72 if you haven’t seen it yet. I can’t remember.
Ooh, super creepy. I like it. So glad I have a nice mother. Speaking of horrible ones, have you read the book “Mother Love” by Domini Taylor? CREEPAY! It was made into a miniseries in the 80s too.
still terrifying even if it was a dream!
never knew thats what that meant =)
Great submit. Very descriptive, loving the voice here!
Ugh… that image you included with your story is so hard to look at. Creepy!
Love how you ended your piece. Totally made me smile.
Icky Icky Icky!!!
…I HATE wolf spiders!!! All over the floor is one thing, but I had one crawl up my leg when I was in the shower one time…
I shudder just thinking about it…
I don’t like spiders either and reading this raised goosebumps on my skin *shudders*. Nice writing.
You just had to include a picture, didn’t you? *shudders* This piece has such a hilarious voice. Great job.
Nice twist at the end! Yish.
Spider dreams = overbearing mothers – love it! Seriously, I now feel things crawling on me…thanks for that!
Great job on this!
Hi,
Good to meet via the campaign. Nice scary piece, and love the mother snip!
Ah spiders, love’em or hate’em when you live in the country as I do they kind of move in from time to time and set up home. The big ones always need rescuing before our little yellow blighters (tiny long-legged critters) spot the biggies. If not, we’ll find huge spiders dead and hanging from single silk thread: cocooned! Flies go the same the way, too. Prolific breeders are these little critters because they’re regularly sent on a trip down vacuum tunnel and dispatched to compost heap.

Creep story–very, very creepy. I’m sure your mother wasn’t overbearing.
Oh, wow, this one really took me by surprise. I think it was a dream, and sure hope so. Can’t think of anything worse than a room full of spiders of any kind. But wolf spiders? Yech! Good job. Loved that little detail at the beginning of worrying about the punctured sheetrock! That touch gave it such a realistic feel.
BTW: Thanks for following me, and for being a new follower, you have one point toward winning my book — The Fourth Wish– in my give-away contest that ends tonight. If you go to my August 26 entry, the rules are posted for how to rack up more points. Winner has a choice of paperback or Kindle version. Have a nice week-end.
Yikes. I declared war on spiders yesterday. They’ve taken over my deck. Had nightmares about them last night. Now first thing this morning, I read your story. Whew.
Eeeewwwww! That’s disgusting! But, I love your last sentence, “A fear of spiders is synonymous with having an overbearing mother.” That was hilarious. Good job!
Ewwwww! I absolutely hate spiders! Lol! Made my skin crawl. ; )
Ah, no wonder I’m not afraid of spiders. My mom’s great. THAT was great. Well written. Funny. If there had been more than one page, it would have been a page turner.
And I love spiders, but I understand they’re the number one phobia. Which leads me to believe there are a lot of overbearing mothers in the world.
eek! spiders! I hate spiders. Oh, but it’s just a nightmare. That’s good.
(I am number 55 on the linky last)
Doreen:
I enjoyed that! Of course, I’ve always liked a good scare in a story and spiders is near the top!
I’ve also awarded you The Versatile Blogger Award! If you choose to accept it, you can follow the rules on my blog…

I hope some of my followers come over to check out your site. I’m totally enjoying reading the “new” blogs I’ve been exposed to in the campaign
Thank you also for joining my site!
YES! Keep telling yourself it’s all in your head!
Loved it. Great job!
GAH! I had to cover that image with a paper while I read. That was somewhat traumatizing.
Great work on the entry!
Yikes! I’d be freaking out.
Hello Doreen.
It’s lovely to meet a fellow writer through the campaign.
I liked this story, loved the voice. Spiders are the scariest thing on this earth as far as I’m concerned. Thankfully, the spiders we get in this part of the world aren’t as hairy as the wolf species, or anything similar.
I particularly liked your reasoning, that fear of spiders is an effect of having an overbearing mother, and really made me wonder about the state of mind of the narrator, which itself, provides a great twist.
Okay I just had to stop and scratch!
Love the suspense and creep factor! Great job Doreen.
I’m getting a creepy, crawly feeling. Eek. Cool entry.
Ugh. Spiders. I hate them. And my mother isn’t even overbearing!
Great story (Dream), but to set the record straight, wolf spiders are creepy, big, and CAN jump, but are VERY SHY and will not attack unless provoked, so if you see one, just shoo it away with a broom (but don’t come at it like a kamakazi pilot!) LOL or he will attack! LOL LOL
Hey, I just wanted to let you know that the picture you have there is not a wolf spider. It’s a fishing spider in the genus Dolomedes, possibly this species: http://bugguide.net/node/view/8444/bgpage
wolf spider eyes are much cuter, see here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/472568
I hope that you will change the picture, as it is on the first page of google image results for the term “wolf spider” and is therefor misinforming a lot of people. Thanks.
